The Impact of Aquatic Psychomotricity on Motor and Cognitive Function in Elderly People with Stroke Sequels

Caroline Prudente Dias, Marta Caroline Araújo da Paixão and Angélica Homobono Nobre

This research sought to verify the influence of aquatic psychomotricity on elderly people with stroke sequels. This is a longitudinal study, with a descriptive and quantitative approach. 21 volunteers were selected, diagnosed with stroke and hemiparesis, which were submitted to a protocol of 8 sessions twice a week for 60 minutes and evaluated by the Gerontopsychomotor Observation Scale and Performance Scale. In the observation scale all aspects were significant (p ≤ 0.05), except in short-term memory (p=0.0797). The performance scale, used to quantify the evolution of patients during treatment, showed an improvement in autonomy during the activities. The protocol of the study proved to be effective, with benefits in cognitive functions and activities of daily living. Therefore, aquatic psychomotricity proved to be effective in mitigating stroke dysfunctions in the elderly.
